Mriganka Sekhar Ganguly
October 10, 2026
ALLGROWRHYTHM · LESSON 15
Don't Lose Them After One Visit.
Retargeting, Remarketing & Customer Retention
👤
→
▤
→
↩
See it. Leave. Reconnect.
A first visit doesn't always lead to a purchase.
The aim isn't to chase everyone. It's to make the next useful step easier.
01 · UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE
Three ideas. Three jobs.
Tap each card to reveal its meaning.
RetargetingReconnect with interested people
Often uses digital signals, such as website visits or ad interactions, to show relevant ads again. Actual audience availability depends on consent, tracking setup and platform rules.
RemarketingFollow up with potential customers
Often refers to follow-up using channels such as email or customer lists. The term overlaps with retargeting in real-world marketing, so platforms and teams may use it differently.
RetentionGive customers a reason to return
Improve the experience after purchase: accurate fulfilment, useful recommendations, service and relevant future offers. Retention is more than running another ad.
The real goalHelp people take the next step
A relevant return visit, qualified enquiry, completed purchase or repeat order matters more than repeatedly showing an ad to everyone.
02 · INTERACTIVE CUSTOMER JOURNEY
Where is the customer now?
STEP 1 OF 4
⌕
Discovers a book
A person sees a Bengali book on Facebook.
Your job: earn attention with something relevant.
← PreviousNext step →
Example: a bookstore that sells books online through WhatsApp. This simulator is educational; it does not run ads or track visitors.
03 · AUDIENCE SEGMENTATION
Don't show everyone the same message.
Choose a group to see an appropriate next step.
A · Viewed a page, no enquiryB · Enquired, no orderC · Already purchasedD · Existing customer, inactive
04 · BUILD A RELEVANT FOLLOW-UP
Make the message useful, not pushy.
EXAMPLE AD PREVIEW

Still exploring Bengali books?
Tell us the author or genre you're looking for. We'll check availability before you order.
ASK ABOUT A BOOK
RelevantMatch the previous interest
A person exploring detective novels may appreciate a relevant reading guide or a verified selection of detective titles.
HonestDon't promise unknown stock
If stock is checked manually, say so. Confirm price, edition and availability before asking for payment.
05 · FREQUENCY & AD FATIGUE
More exposure isn't always better.
Move the slider to explore an illustrative scenario.
TIMES A PERSON SEES THE AD
3 times
A reminder
A few relevant exposures may help someone remember an offer.
This is a teaching illustration, not a universal frequency cap. Actual performance varies by audience, creative, campaign goal, platform and time period.
06 · RETENTION LOOP
Turn a first purchase into a good experience.
1. Deliver the promiseAccuracy first
Send the correct book, edition and quantity. Be clear about delivery timing and charges.
2. Make it easyReduce friction
Give clear order confirmation, useful updates and a simple way to ask questions or resolve problems.
3. Stay usefulEarn the next visit
Share genuinely relevant reading lists, author updates or new arrivals. Avoid unnecessary messages.
4. Invite a returnRelevant next offer
When appropriate, suggest related titles or invite the customer to enquire about a book they may want next.

Good experience → Trust → Possible repeat purchase
Retention is earned, not guaranteed.
07 · MEASURE WHAT MATTERS
Don't judge retention by reach alone.
Return visitsAre people coming back?
Measure repeat visits when reliable analytics are available. A return visit is a signal, not proof of a sale.
Qualified enquiriesAre people ready to buy?
Count enquiries with a genuine product or purchase need, not every message or reaction.
Repeat purchase rateDo customers order again?
Repeat purchase rate = customers who bought again during a defined period ÷ customers in the defined cohort × 100. Define the cohort and time window consistently.
Acquisition costWhat did a new customer cost?
Customer acquisition cost (CAC) should include the relevant acquisition expenses and a clearly defined number of new customers. Don't confuse it with cost per click.
08 · PRIVACY & PERMISSION
Should you retarget this person?
Tap a scenario and consider the responsible action.
A · Tracking permission is required but wasn't grantedB · A customer opted out of marketingC · A team wants to upload customer data
Follow applicable privacy law, platform policies and consent requirements. Collect only necessary data, protect it and respect opt-outs.
09 · QUICK QUIZ
Check your understanding.
Question 1 of 3
Someone asks about a book but doesn't order. What's a sensible next step?
