Meet Your Classroom Characters

Riya · Learner
Bappa · Bookshop Owner
Bappa · The problemMy Bengali bookstore has thousands of interesting books. But when people search Google for books, my shop is often nowhere to be seen. How can I fix this?
Riya · The questionBefore changing anything, we need to understand what people search for, what they want, and whether our online information actually helps them.
Guide · The lessonExactly. We will connect search visibility to real business outcomes: relevant visitors, WhatsApp enquiries, customer trust and sales. More traffic alone is not the goal.
Conversation 1 of 3
Your mission: Help Bappa make his bookstore easier to discover and easier to buy from.

Chapter 1 — SEO, AEO and Search Visibility

SEOSearch Engine Optimization. Improving a website and its content so search engines can discover, understand and potentially show it for relevant searches.
AEOAnswer Engine Optimization. Making useful, accurate answers easier for people and answer-focused search experiences to find and use.
Search VisibilityHow easily people can encounter your business through relevant organic results, local results and answer experiences.
The realityNo technique guarantees a ranking, featured snippet or inclusion in an AI-generated answer. The aim is to improve discoverability, usefulness and trust.
BappaSo, if I do SEO, will Google automatically put my shop at the top?
RiyaNo. SEO improves the chances that a relevant page can be found and understood. Ranking still depends on many factors, and competitors are working on their websites too.
GuideThink of SEO as improving your shop's discoverability, not buying a guaranteed position. AEO follows the same people-first principle, with extra emphasis on answering real questions clearly.

Chapter 2 — Understand Search Intent Before Keywords

Two people may search for similar words but want completely different things. If your page does not match their purpose, visits may not turn into enquiries or sales.

IntentExample searchUseful content
InformationalHow do I choose a Bengali thriller?A guide explaining genres, reading levels and recommendations.
Commercial researchBest Bengali mystery novelsA curated list, comparisons and reasons to choose each book.
TransactionalBuy Bengali novels onlineProduct details, price, availability and clear ordering instructions.
LocalBengali bookshops in KolkataAccurate location, business hours, contact details and directions.
BappaI'll put the words “Bengali books” on every page. Surely that will help me rank for every book-related search?
RiyaNot necessarily. Someone looking for a reading recommendation needs different information from someone ready to order a particular book.
GuideCorrect. Match the page to the searcher's intent. Repeating keywords without providing the right information is not a substitute for relevance.
Conversation 1 of 3

Test yourself: What does this searcher need?

Likely intent: Transactional.

The person probably wants to buy a book. Provide ordering instructions, delivery area, delivery charges, payment options and a way to confirm availability before payment.

Likely intent: Informational or commercial research.

Start with a helpful reading list. Explain the style, genre and suitability of each book, then link to available books that the reader can purchase.

Chapter 3 — How to Research Keywords

Keyword research is not just collecting popular phrases. It is discovering the language customers use and connecting it to the business problems you can solve.

Collect phrases from WhatsApp enquiries, customer questions, comments, reviews and sales conversations. These reveal actual needs, though they do not tell you how frequently the whole market searches for a phrase.
Use Google autocomplete and related searches to discover possible queries. Treat suggestions as research clues, not proof of exact search volume or guaranteed demand.
Search the phrase yourself. Look at the type of pages appearing: guides, product pages, marketplaces, local listings or videos. This helps you understand what kind of result may satisfy the query.
Group phrases that share the same intent. One comprehensive page can often answer several closely related queries. You do not need a separate page for every variation.
Prioritize queries that match your books, services, customers and business goals. A large amount of irrelevant traffic may create work without producing sales.
RiyaIf one keyword has 50,000 monthly searches and another has only 300, should I always choose the first one?
GuideNo. Consider intent, competition, relevance and conversion potential. A specific query with lower search volume may attract people who are much closer to buying.
BappaSo I should look beyond search volume and ask whether the person searching is a potential customer?
Conversation 1 of 3

Chapter 4 — On-Page SEO

Every important page should make two things clear: what the page is about and how it helps the visitor.

Write a concise, descriptive title that reflects the page's real content. Give important pages distinct titles. Search engines may sometimes generate a different title link.
Use a clear main heading that tells visitors what the page covers. Organize supporting sections logically. Do not fill headings with awkward keyword repetitions.
A book page may need the author, language, edition, price and availability. Include only details you can verify, and update them when they change.
Keep URLs understandable and descriptive where practical. Avoid unnecessary parameters and confusing strings. Do not change existing URLs casually without considering redirects and existing links.
Link related guides, authors, categories and product pages where useful. Clear internal links help people navigate and help search engines discover related content.
Use descriptive filenames where practical. Write alt text that communicates the important information in an image. Purely decorative images can use empty alt text. Do not stuff keywords into alt text.
Provide accurate business details, contact information, clear delivery terms and transparent policies. Trust is important to customers, even when it cannot be reduced to a single ranking factor.
Example: Improving a weak page title

Weak Home

More descriptive Bengali Books and Novels — Chuckervertty Chatterjee & Co.

Use the second style only if it accurately describes the page. No title guarantees a ranking.

BappaMy book pages show only a picture and a name. Is that enough?
RiyaA customer may also need the author, edition, language, price, availability and ordering instructions.
GuideExactly. Better page information helps people decide whether a product meets their needs. It can also help search engines understand the page more clearly.
Conversation 1 of 3

Chapter 5 — Technical SEO

Technical SEO helps search engines access and understand important pages. It also helps visitors use your website without unnecessary friction.

Check internal links, sitemap availability and unintended crawling blocks. A sitemap can help search engines discover URLs, but submitting one does not guarantee indexing.
Look for accidental noindex directives, blocked resources and technical errors. A page being indexed does not mean it will rank prominently.
Test text size, spacing, navigation, buttons and checkout or enquiry paths on an actual mobile screen. Avoid layouts that force people to zoom or struggle to tap controls.
Check image sizes, loading speed, layout shifts and interaction responsiveness. PageSpeed Insights can help identify problems and suggest improvements.
Similar pages may exist at multiple URLs. Where appropriate, canonical signals help indicate the preferred version. Do not assume every similar page needs to be removed.
Use relevant, valid structured data that matches visible page content. It can help search engines interpret information and may make pages eligible for certain search features, but rich results are not guaranteed.
Useful tools
  • Google Search Console — queries, clicks, impressions, indexing and search performance.
  • Google PageSpeed Insights — performance diagnostics and Core Web Vitals information.
  • Rich Results Test — checks eligibility for supported rich-result types.
RiyaIf my website looks beautiful on a laptop but the buttons are tiny on a phone, is that a technical SEO problem?
GuideIt is certainly a usability problem. Mobile experience, performance and technical accessibility all deserve attention. If customers cannot complete an order easily, your business can lose sales even when the page gets visits.
BappaThen testing the actual customer journey is as important as checking search visibility?
Conversation 1 of 3

Chapter 6 — Local SEO

Local SEO helps people discover relevant businesses in a particular area. Google's local results consider factors including relevance, distance and prominence.

If your business is eligible, claim and verify its profile. Keep the real business name, address or service area, phone number, hours and category accurate. Follow Google's eligibility guidelines.
Use genuine photos of the storefront, entrance, interior and relevant products. Photos help customers recognize the business and understand what to expect.
Invite customers to leave honest reviews without pressure. Do not buy fake reviews, fabricate customer experiences or offer prohibited incentives for positive reviews.
Keep business details consistent across your website, business profile and relevant directories. Correct outdated phone numbers, opening hours and addresses.
Explain location, directions, opening hours and customer service options. Avoid creating many thin pages that simply replace one city name with another.
BappaWill Local SEO only bring people into my physical shop?
RiyaNo. Accurate business information also helps people verify a business and contact it. But customers who want online delivery need clear ordering and delivery information too.
GuideRight. Local discovery and online sales are related but different journeys. Make sure your strategy supports the actual way customers want to buy.
Conversation 1 of 3
Important: Do not use a false address or create an ineligible business profile just to appear in more locations.

Chapter 7 — AEO: Answer Questions Clearly

People ask direct questions in search engines and AI tools. Useful, accurate and well-organized information can help answer those questions. There is no special trick that guarantees inclusion in an AI answer.

Customer question

“How can I order Bengali books online in Kolkata?”

“We are the best bookstore. Stay connected with us!” This is promotional, vague and does not tell the customer how to order.
“Send the book title through WhatsApp to confirm availability and price. Before placing the order, check the delivery area, delivery charge, payment method and expected delivery time.” Use this wording only if it accurately describes the business process.
Build FAQs and guides around questions customers genuinely ask. Answer the question directly, then add context, limitations and relevant next steps.
Update prices, stock information, delivery policies and contact details when they change. Never invent information simply to provide a confident-sounding answer.
Make authorship and relevant expertise clear. Link to authoritative sources where useful and distinguish facts from opinions or recommendations.
Use natural language, clear headings and appropriate structured data. Do not create awkward text, repeat questions unnaturally or publish large quantities of low-value AI-generated pages.
RiyaShould I write special content just for AI systems?
GuideStart by helping real people. Clear answers, accurate facts, accessible pages and useful supporting details can serve both people and systems that interpret content.
BappaSo I should not promise same-day delivery in an answer unless I can actually provide it?
GuideExactly. An inaccurate answer may win attention but lose trust. Accuracy is more important than making a claim sound impressive.
Conversation 1 of 4

Chapter 8 — Build a Content Strategy

Organize content around customer needs. A guide, a category page, an FAQ and a product page should have different purposes while helping customers move forward.

Discovery“7 Bengali Mystery Novels for New Readers” helps people explore a genre.
Evaluation“Mystery vs Thriller: What's the Difference?” helps readers choose what suits them.
Purchase supportAccurate price, edition, language, availability and ordering steps reduce uncertainty.
RetentionReading lists based on customer interests help maintain relationships and encourage relevant repeat purchases.
  1. A reader discovers a helpful guide.
  2. The guide links to relevant book categories or products.
  3. The product page provides reliable information and a clear ordering path.
  4. After purchase, appropriate follow-up can help the customer discover more books.

Every step should be useful. Do not force visitors through unnecessary pages.

BappaCould I publish 100 short pages by changing just the book genre or keyword?
GuideOnly if each page serves a distinct need and provides real value. Repetitive, thin pages can waste resources and provide a poor experience.
RiyaSo fewer useful pages with clear purposes can be a better starting point than a large collection of nearly identical pages.
Conversation 1 of 3

Chapter 9 — Measure What Matters

ImpressionsHow often your result appeared in reported search results.
Clicks and CTRHow many clicks you received and the percentage of impressions that resulted in clicks.
Qualified enquiriesHow many relevant visitors contacted the business through WhatsApp, phone or another contact route.
Sales and conversionHow many enquiries became purchases, how much revenue they generated and which channels contributed.

Google Search Console helps you understand search performance. Analytics tools can help explain on-site behaviour. If orders arrive through WhatsApp, track the source, enquiry, confirmed order and revenue using an appropriate record-keeping system.

RiyaMy impressions are increasing, but WhatsApp enquiries are not. Does that mean SEO has failed?
GuideNot necessarily. Check whether the queries are relevant, whether the search result communicates value, whether the landing page answers customer questions and whether contacting or ordering is easy.
BappaAnd if I receive many enquiries but very few confirmed orders?
GuideInvestigate the next step: availability, price, delivery cost, response time, payment instructions and customer confidence. Search visibility is only one part of the purchase journey.
Conversation 1 of 4

Think like a strategist

Investigate in this order:
  1. Are the new search queries relevant to your products?
  2. Do landing pages match the intent behind those queries?
  3. Are price, stock and delivery terms clear?
  4. Can a mobile visitor complete the enquiry or purchase without friction?
  5. Are enquiries being answered and orders tracked consistently?

Change one important variable at a time where possible, and compare results over a suitable period.

Chapter 10 — Your Seven-Day Action Plan

Complete the tasks as you work through them. Your checklist progress updates automatically.

0 of 7 tasks completed.

BappaDo I need to fix everything on the first day?
GuideNo. Start with the problems that most affect customers and business outcomes. Record your starting point, make improvements, then measure what changes.
RiyaThat makes the plan manageable. Instead of guessing, I can work through the steps and check the results.
Conversation 1 of 3

Final Quiz — Test Your Understanding

Answer all three questions, then select “Check answers”.

1. Which approach is best for SEO?

Explanation: SEO starts with helping search engines discover and understand relevant content that serves the visitor's needs. Keyword repetition alone does not achieve this.

2. What makes an answer useful for AEO?

Explanation: Direct answers help people understand the information they need. Supporting details should be accurate, relevant and current.

3. Does greater search visibility guarantee more sales?

Explanation: Visibility creates opportunities, not guaranteed purchases. The customer must still find the offer relevant, trust the business and be able to complete the purchase.
Your score will appear here.
